VIENNA – Passengers using Vienna’s public transport network will likely face higher ticket prices from January 2027, as Wiener Linien prepares another fare increase linked to inflation. While the exact extent of the price hike has not yet been finalized, the operator has confirmed that fares will continue to be adjusted annually in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI).
A spokesperson for Wiener Linien said the company is currently finalizing the new fare structure and will publish detailed information later this autumn.
“Like ÖBB and VOR, Wiener Linien will adjust its fares annually based on the Consumer Price Index, as announced last autumn. Wiener Linien is not engaging in price speculation,” the spokesperson said.
The planned increase comes amid continuing inflationary pressures in Austria. According to Statistics Austria, the Consumer Price Index in August 2026 was 3.2 percent higher than a year earlier, while September inflation reached 3.6 percent year-on-year.
If Wiener Linien applies a similar increase to its ticket prices, the standard annual travel pass could rise from the current €467 to around €483 for passengers paying the full amount upfront. Customers who opt to pay for their annual pass in installments would face a higher overall cost.
The fare adjustment would mark the second consecutive year of increases. At the beginning of 2026, Wiener Linien raised ticket prices for the first time since introducing its popular €365 annual pass in 2012. At the same time, the company announced a new policy of linking fares to inflation through annual adjustments.
This so-called “valorisation” system is already standard practice for both Austria’s national rail operator ÖBB and the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR), which covers public transport services across Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. The Consumer Price Index serves as the benchmark for annual fare revisions.
For Vienna commuters and regular public transport users, another increase now appears inevitable, although the final price changes remain uncertain. Those purchasing an annual pass before the end of 2026 could secure the current fare and avoid paying higher prices for the following twelve months.
In a separate development, Wiener Linien has announced that tickets with flexible start dates can now be purchased through the WienMobil app, providing passengers with greater flexibility when activating their travel passes.
